Bac Giang to expand methadone treatment for drug addicts

The northern province of Bac Giang targets to set up six more rehab centres using methadone method which can accommodate 1,300 patients by the end of 2015, said Director of the provincial Department of Health Ong The Vien.

The expansion is prompted by the efficient operation of the existing centre in the province, which has treated 371 people since its establishment in September last year.

Tran Thi Phuong Lan, Director of Bac Giang’s centre for HIV/AIDS prevention and control, said after six months on Methadone treatment, the proportion of intravenous drug user drops from 91 percent to 8.9 percent, and currently 263 patients have stopped using heroin while continuing on the treatment.

To enhance the treatment efficiency, the province has provided social services such as health care, consultation and job opportunities to help patients gradually return to normal life.

According to statistics of the provincial police, by June this year, the province had 2,044 drug addicts, 90 percent of whom were addicted to heroin.-VNA
