Bac Lieu (VNA) – The Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu has carried out several rural and irrigational works to cope with climate change, using funds from the government’s budget and foreign loans.

Accordingly, the province has allocated hundreds billions of dong to invest in construction works such as a 54km sea-dyke system in Nha Mat and Ganh Hao estuaries in Dong Hai district.

The province has also installed sluices to prevent the intrusion of saltwater while introducing new rice varieties which can survive in saltwater in many districts of the locality.

In 2016, the province spent over 11 billion VND (494,000 USD) on building over 510 sea-dyke and sluice works for rice-shrimp farming areas, helping to save nearly 20,000 hectares of winter-spring crop and over 10,000 hectares of rice-shrimp farming in the districts of Hong Dan and Phuoc Long.

The province has proposed more support from the government to carry out a shelter area for ship in Ninh Quoi and additional irrigation works to cope with saltwater intrusion and severe weather.-VNA
