Article 4: Moving to other Party cells after graduation: Answers from young Party members

In an interview recently granted to Vietnam News Agency, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Hanoi universities and colleges Nguyen Thanh Son talked about Party building at universities and colleges.

Hard maths

Q: Could you elaborate on the Party development at universities and colleges across Hanoi over the past years?

Answer: The Party Committee of the Hanoi universities and colleges has been taking the development of young Party members as a key task, and a source of addition for the Party.

It is also expected to improve the Party leadership because they provide high-quality human resources. Compared to other sectors, universities are the largest source of young Party members. Among the nearly 12,000 new Party members each year, some 2,000 come from universities and colleges.

The work holds many advantages, including a great number of active students with high cognitive standards and righteous motivation to join the Party. Furthermore, authorities at all levels are also paying attention to the Party development.

However, universities have their own difficulties. In order to be admitted to the Party, students must earn good academic results and take an active part in social activities. Some go to school in the morning and work part-time in the evening, and that is why they have no time left for social activities. They wonder they should strive to join the Party or focus on study and accumulate experience to find jobs more easily.

Several units are not fully aware of the significance of Party building at schools to create a contingent of successors. Another difficulty is the lack of Party cells in companies. Some even often change their places of residence due to unstable jobs and that is why they are unable to regularly join Party activities.

Almost all those students join Party activities in universities, but no later than 12 months after graduation. Many had their names removed from the Party membership list due to their long absence from Party activities.

This is a very difficult problem and no solution has been found.

Q: Has the committee had any statistics on these cases?

A: We are asking universities to make statistics on the number of the students who had their names removed. However, they only keep the list of students who left their Party dossiers in universities and failed to contact again. There are not data about cases moving to other Party cells.

Awareness of each young Party member of top importance

Q: Which orientations are set by the committee to deal with difficulties and better develop young Party members among the students?

A: The committee holds the largest source of human resources compared to other sectors. However, the number of new Party members each year still fails to match potential.

It is building a scheme for the work that needs the involvement of the entire political system.

The first measure is to improve awareness of units’ leaders and consider their political responsibility for the work.

The second is to assign quota to each grassroots unit.

Finally, youth campaigns must be stepped up to create conditions for students to join the Party.

The committee is also re-considering criteria for Party admission, including high academic results. It may not be too difficult for universities of social sciences but it is for those of technical ones, especially those who join youth union activities and could not focus on their study completely. There remain different opinions about the issue.

Q: Do you have any advice for young Party members who want to move to other Party cells?

A: In the past, graduates mostly worked for State agencies. But today, the labour market has been shifting to the private sector, prompting students to change their mindset.

Before deciding to join the Party, they should make thorough considerations. If Party members regularly contact universities or cells they are joining, I believe every Party cell will create favourable conditions for them./.
