Nearly 5,000 tonnes of expired milk buried in a landfill in the southern province of Binh Duong was dug out on June 8 for treatment.
The untreated waste had been buried by the Waste Treatment Enterprise, a subsidiary of the Binh Duong Water Supply – Sewage and Environment Company.
The milk will be treated under the supervision of the Binh Duong Province People's Committee's interdisciplinary inspection team.
It will take about 45 days to completely treat the buried milk at the company's waste treatment plant, according to inspectors.
Police from the Department of Environment's southern office on May 19 visited the enterprise's landfill and discovered thousands of expired milk cartons buried without being treated.
The expired milk belonged to Friestland Campina Vietnam Co which had signed a 20 billion VND (1 million USD) contract with the Waste Treatment Enterprise on May 3 to treat 15,500 tonnes of expired milk.
But the enterprise buried the milk at its landfill area without treating it as agreed to in the contract.
Truong Van Toan, head of the Legal Department of the Friestland Campina Vietnam , told Nguoi Lao dong (The Labourer) newspaper that after the buried milk was treated properly, his company would consider whether or not to sign a contract with the local company for treating the remaining 10,000 tonnes of expired milk./.
