Cambodian Ministry of Interior will provide electronic identification cards (IDs) to an additional 5.5 million citizens in the near future as the country is in transition from using normal to electronic IDs, local media reported on December 12.

"Up to now, 2.2 million citizens have been provided with this new type of electronic IDs in the first phase, and in this second phase, the Ministry of Interior will give electronic IDs to 5.5 million citizens," AKP news agency quoted Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sar Kheng as saying at the opening ceremony of the 10th Government Discussion Forum on Electronic Identity held in Phnom Penh.

As we are moving towards the ASEAN economic integration, effective name registration and identification management will facilitate the management of the flow of people and goods, underlined the Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister.

The forum was organized by Cambodia’s Ministry of Interior and the Asia Pacific Smart Card Association (APSCA) in December 11-12 with the participation of delegates from 46 countries in the Asia-Pacific region.-VNA
