The Phnom Penh municipal court on Sept. 22 sentenced Som Ek to 18 years in prison for his involvement in a failed bomb plot targeting the Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Monument in July 2007.

Som Ek, a leader of the terrorist group, “Tiger Head Movement”, was arrested in January 2009 after he was accused of planting explosives outside the Ministry of Defence and the state television station TV3 that month.

Presiding judge of the court Suos Sam Ath said Som Ek’s act not only caused social disorder and political instability, but also affected friendly relations between Cambodia and Vietnam .

The court is expected to hand down a verdict on October 1 against Som Ek and his four accomplices, all of the “Tiger Head Movement”, suspected of organising the failed January 2009 bomb attempt.

If found guilty of terrorism and undermining public assets, the defendants would face imprisonment of between 20-30 years each./.
