Can Tho prepares to host ASEM conference in June

The hosting of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) conference on climate change response toward sustainable development next June is a highlight of Can Tho’s people-to-people diplomacy this year.

Can Tho (VNA) – The hosting of the Asia-EuropeMeeting (ASEM) conference on climate change response toward sustainabledevelopment next June is a highlight of Can Tho’s people-to-people diplomacythis year, stated a municipal leader.

Authorities of the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho has directedrelevant agencies and sectors to prepare needed conditions for the event interms of venues, reception, security, and logistics, Vice Chairman of themunicipal People’s Committee Truong Quang Hoai Nam reported at a meeting with aForeign Ministry delegation on April 9. The delegation was led by Director ofthe Directorate of the State Protocol Mai Phuoc Dung.

The sides agreed to coordinate in preparing the event.

Slated for June 19 and 20, the ASEM conference is set tofeature four plenary sessions, sidelines exhibitions and local tours forparticipants, among other activities.

It is expected to be attended by 180 delegates from 53 ASEMmember states and international organisations.

At the 13th ASEM Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held on November2017 in Myanmar, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister PhamBinh Minh put forth an initiative on hosting an ASEM conference on joint actionsin response to climate change in order to realise the Sustainable Development Goals.The initiative has to date been sponsored by Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands,Italy, Myanmar, Finland, Australia and Vietnam.

The conference is the most important event hosted by Vietnamas part of ASEM 2018.

Vietnam joined the forum in 1996. The country organised the5th ASEM Summit in 2004, and economic ministers’ meeting (2001),information-technology ministers’ meeting (2006), foreign and educationministers’ meetings (2009) and labour ministers’ meeting (2012).

In 2107, Vietnam successfully carried out the PrimeMinister’s initiative at the 11th ASEM Summit in Mongolia in July 2016 byhosting the ASEM conference on innovative education and human resources buildingfor sustainable development in Hue city on March. The country chaired the 37thmeeting of the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) Board of Governors.- VNA

Northern region to experience cold spell

At the discussion session, representatives of the ministry, offshore wind developers, equipment manufacturers and international financial institutions, including CIP, Siemens and KfW, discussed Vietnam’s offshore wind investment potential and the Vietnamese Government’s plans to achieve an offshore wind capacity target of 17GW by 2035, including measures to attract international investment to the country.

Floods affect over 16,000 homes, nearly 25,000ha of crops

The floods submerged and damaged 22,499ha of rice, crops and vegetables, along with 2,172ha of other crops. A further 1,175.62ha of aquaculture areas were affected. Some 1,999 metres of irrigation canals were eroded or damaged, while 15 schools were flooded.

Heavy rains cause widespread damage in Phu Tho, Thanh Hoa

Prolonged heavy rains from September 13–17 have caused flooding and landslides, damaging homes, crops, roads and infrastructure in Phu Tho and Thanh Hoa provinces, with local authorities mobilising forces for emergency response.

Ninh Binh establishes Kim Bang white-rumped langur conservation area

Covering a total area of 3,182ha, the conservation area comprises 3,016.81ha of natural forest, 64.25ha of plantation forest and 100.94ha of land without forest, with no water surface area. It is located in the Ly Thuong Kiet, Tam Chuc and Nguyen Uy wards of Ninh Binh province.
