Capital gears up for storm season

The municipal Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Controlreported that essential equipment and vehicles for flood prevention andcontrol are ready in key areas.

The city has sped up the upgrade of dyke systems and steps to preventlandslides as well as developed search and rescue plans, according tohead of the municipal Dyke Management Department Do Duc Thinh.

Hanoi has 20 key dykes stretching nearly 470km. They are underregular inspection patrols so that any damage can be quickly fixed.

An assessment of the quality of the dyke system and water reservoirsaround the city is expected to be completed this month.

"The city will also map out plans to evacuate local residents in floodand landslide-prone areas if necessary, particularly children and theelderly, and encourage people to prepare flood and storm prevention andcontrol measures," he said.

Authorities have been told to increase inspections and strictly punishthose caught violating rules covering dykes and irrigation works.

Inspectors have already discovered more than 4,700 violations of dykerules, including encroachments on the dyke protective corridor such asmakeshift shops and houses.

"Authorities will stamp out illegal makeshift dwellings to ensure thesafety of the locals," Thinh said.

To help promote drainage work, Hanoi Water Drainage Company has set upa hotline 043976 2245 for people to report information relating tofloods.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has urged localitiesin the northern and Central Highland regions to complete inspectionand upgrade of reservoirs and dams./.
