A car bomb went off at a shopping mall on the popular Thai resort island of Samui, Surat Thani province on late April 10, wounding seven people including an Italian girl.

The car exploded in the parking area of the Central Festival mall on the island while shoppers were still inside the building.

The bomb was packed in a car believed to have been stolen by Islamic insurgents in one of three southern Thai provinces.

Samui is a popular tourist island in the Gulf of Thailand where around 20 million travellers visit every year.

The Thai government has been dealing with instable situation in these most-Muslim-majority provinces, where extreme insurgency has killed more than 6,000 people over the past decade.-VNA
