Chairman of HCM City’s People Committee named

HCM City (VNA) – Vice Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong has been elected as Chairman of the Municipal People’s Committee with 97.24 approval.

The election took place in HCM City on December 11 during the last sitting day of the municipal People’s Council’s 20th session for the 2011-2016 tenure.

Phong was re-elected as Vice Secretary of the municipal Party Committee for 2015-2020 during its recent 10th Congress.

Phong, 53, a native of the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre, held the positions of the municipal Youth Union Secretary, Permanent Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee, Secretary of the Ben Tre Party Committee, and Chairman of the Ben Tre People’s Council.

He holds a doctorate degree in economics and a degree in advanced political theory.

Speaking at the session, Phong promised to do his utmost to foster the city’s development in all fields, from the economy, defence-security, foreign relations, international integration, and efficiency of the municipal authorities’ operations.

He said he will pay his attention to accelerating economic restructuring, improving growth quality and competitiveness, and bettering the manpower quality, towards realising the city’s target of sustainable and rapid development, making it become a civilized and modern city.

HCM City has fulfilled 23 of the 25 socio-economic targets for 2015 set by the council, posting stable and fair economic growth. Local gross domestic product this year grew by 9.8 percent from 2014, the highest year-on-year pace in three straight years.

The city raked in some 62.82 billion USD in export revenue and welcomed 4.6 million foreign tourists in 2015.-VNA
