A communication campaign to promote the use of safe water andenvironmental sanitation was reviewed at a seminar in Hanoi on Feb. 27.
Theseminar was jointly held by the Ministry of Agriculture and RuralDevelopment, UNICEF and Lien Aid, a non-governmental organisation ofSingapore.
Addressing the event, Deputy Minister of Agriculture andRural Development Dao Xuan Hoc said the national rural safe water andenvironmental sanitation programme could not have been implementedunless people’s behaviour and awareness changed.
After one year ofinformation promotion with goodwill ambassador, comedian Xuan Bac, theprogramme has helped change rural people’s behaviour, awareness andhabits and considerably improved the community’s environmentalsanitation. It also encouraged agencies and organisations to becomeinvolved in safe water, personal hygiene and environmental sanitationissues.
Chief Representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund inVietnam Lotta Sylwander highlighted the wholehearted role of Xuan Bacas rural water and environmental sanitation goodwill ambassador.
Theeffective cooperation among Government agencies, UN bodies and donorshas created an impetus in raising people’s awareness and changing theirbehaviour, she said.
She pledged to continue supporting the programmeso all rural people, particularly children, can access safe water andsanitation and enjoy a healthy life.-VNA
