China successfully launched its fourth orbiter into space at night of June 2 from the Xichang space centre in the southwestern province of Sichuan.

The satellite Beidou will join three other satellitesalready in orbit to form a network that would provide navigation,positioning and short message services in the Asia and Pacific regionby around 2012.

China plans to have 35 satellites inspace with an aim of providing global navigation services by 2020.

In2000, China began to build up its own satellite navigation systemwith successful launching of three orbiters over just three years.

China is the third country in the world to develop its own satellitesystem, behind the United States and Russia./.
