Hanoi (VNA) – China has voiced its support for the second summit between US President Donald Trump and Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) leader Kim Jong-un in Hanoi from February 27-28, the Global Times said.

The DPRK-USA Hanoi Summit Vietnam kicked off on February 27, drawing the attention of the whole world. There is a symbolic significance to have this meeting convened in Hanoi, an article on the Global Times wrote. Despite being a staunch foe of the US in the past, Vietnam now has the best relations with the American country among all socialist countries.

On the threshold of the summit, US President Donald Trump tweeted “Vietnam is thriving like few places on earth. The DPRK would be the same, very quickly, if it would denuclearise”.

The change of Vietnam, from enemy to friend of the US, is appealing to the DPRK, according to the Global Times.

It also said that for socialist countries to advance reform and opening-up, they must develop ties with the west, particularly the US. Like Vietnam, if the DPRK wants to branch out its economy, it must better relations with the US. Neighbouring countries like China and the Republic of Korea all support the DPRK to take the step.-VNA
