Hanoi (VNA) – Natural disaster prevention and control should be integrated into socio-economic development plans, especially in localities, experts said at a workshop on December 3.

The workshop was jointly held by the Centre For Sustainable Community Development (SCODE) and the Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment (VACNE).

It looked into a circular replacing Circular No 05/2016-TT-KHDT on integrating the fight against natural disasters and climate change into socio-economic development plans.

The delegates took note of Vietnam’s commitment to net zero emissions by 2050 presented at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow, the UK last month.

The commitment demonstrates Vietnam’s huge efforts to work together with the international community in climate change response, they said.

The Ministry of Planning and Investment in coordination with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on November 19, 2021 issued a document on the consultation of draft Circular No 05/2016-TT-KHDT.

The delegates also discussed the draft framework on the integration of national disaster and climate change response into communal socio-economic development plans.

Dr. Nguyen Van Liem, an expert in climate change, said the integration should undergo different steps, including assessment, ratification, implementation, supervision and adjustment.

He also suggested maximizing resources from organisations and businesses in this regard./.
