Cuban President Raul Castro and Timor-Leste Prime Minister Rui Maria de Araujo have pledged to forge stronger bilateral cooperation, especially in health care, during their meeting in Havana on October 5.

The two leaders agreed that the relationship between the two countries is growing while reaffirming their commitment to supporting each other at international forums.

Cuba and Timor-Leste set up diplomatic ties after the Southeast Asian country officially claimed its territorial sovereignty in May 2002. Since then, they have enjoyed sound partnerships in health care, education and sports.

Currently, nearly 140 Cuban doctors and health staff are working in Timor-Leste, mostly in remote areas. Since 2005, about 850 Timor-Leste students have studied in Cuban universities, mostly in medicine.

The meeting was held during Araujo’s third visit to the Caribbean country, which is the second by a senior leader of Timor-Leste after Parliament Speaker Vicente da Silvain’s visit in April.-VNA
