HCM City (VNA) – Customs officers at Tan Son Nhat international airport in Ho Chi Minh City on June 29 discovered 4kg of marijuana carefully hidden in 20 vacuum-compressed nylon bags in a package of food and personal belongings sent from the US.

The package was addressed to a man in Hoang Mai district, Hanoi. The sender was based in the US state of California.

Earlier on June 19, the airport’s customs also found 2.7 kg of marijuana hidden in 12 vacuum-compressed nylon bags sent from Los Angeles, California to a recipient in the northern province of Vinh Phuc.

On June 12, two cases of illegally transporting 5.2kg of marijuana with similar tricks were also busted at the airport.

The airport’ customs office said it had anticipated the new trend with drug trafficking rings in Canada and the US, and promptly set up a counter plan, collecting data and keeping close track of major trafficking routes and rings.

Since the beginning of this year, Tan Son Nhat customs officers have discovered 37kg of marijuana in 23 batches of goods via the airport.

The customs agency is coordinating with authorized agencies to investigate the cases further.-VNA
