Itwill be the second such road project after a tunnel at the West Han River banktraffic intersection commenced construction in October.
Theroad tunnel project, which is included in the World Bank-funded sustainabledevelopment project with a total investment of 220 billion VND (9.77 millionUSD), will replace the current ground-level intersection by a system of160m-long open air tunnels and 80m underground tunnels. There will be two lanesfor Bus Rapid Transit along with another two lanes.
Theproject, which covers 48,000sq.m, will help ease traffic jams, while notdestroying urban structures or incurring the cost of land clearance.
"It’sone of the key projects of the city’s sustainable development in promotingpublic transport and a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network. The road tunnel projectwill offer smooth transport with a multi-level road intersection, and will notrequire land clearance and resettlement," Mai Dinh Khanh from the city’stransport department told Vietnam News at the ground-breaking ceremony.
Hesaid the project would ease congestion and reduce the pollution of rapidurbanisation and would encourage a higher use of public transport for dailycommutes.
NguyenHuu Tuan, deputy general director of the Thuan An construction and trading joint-stockcompany, a contractor of the project, said the tunnel will be completed nextOctober before the 2017 APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation) Summit in DaNang.
“Weplan to speed up construction of the project before hosting APEC. The tunnelwill be used during the biggest event which will be held in the city nextyear,” Tuan said.
Witha population of one million, Da Nang’s current public transit system is notmeeting the needs of local residents with only 1 percent of the 2.5 milliondaily journeys made by public transport.
Thecity also plans to build a metro, tramway, underground and sky train between2020 and 2030.
InOctober, the city began construction the 137.5-billion VND (6.11 million USD)road tunnel at the intersection of Le Duan and Tran Phu streets.
DaNang, the third largest city in Vietnam, has invested a lot in urbandevelopment to make it the largest city in the central region and a green cityby 2025, with funds from the World Bank.
In2013, the World Bank agreed to provide 202 million USD for a 272 million USD sustainabledevelopment project to help build the city’s Bus Rapid Transit network, buildnew roads and revamp the drainage system.
Thebank also funded a five-year priority infrastructure project for the city, bycovering 70 percent of the total investment of $218.4 million.
