Deputy PM urges solar power development

Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai has urged the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) to offer investment, tax and price incentives for the development of renewable energy, including solar power.

Addressing a meeting of the National Steering Committee for the seventh Electricity Planning on October 23, the Deputy PM urged the Ministry to facilitate the implementation and operation of projects on exploration and use of solar power.

The Deputy PM, who is head of the Committee, has asked the MoIT to consult regional and international experience, in a bid to develop more relevant incentives for the sector.

According to the plan, Vietnam will see an increase of nearly 10 percent in the national demand for electricity in the 2016-2020 period. Therefore, Vietnam needs to consider alternative energy sources, especially wind power, biomass power, and solar power to meet the demand.

Vietnam has significant potential for the development of solar and wind power but it faces a wide range of difficulties in scaling up the renewable energy industry.

Only three of 42 wind power projects have been connected with the national power grid, according to a report of the Ministry of Industry and Trade's Energy Institute.

The Government has set a target for wind power development at 1,000 MW by 2020 and about 6,200 MW by 2030.-VNA
