The Son La provincial administration on May 18 announced completion of the relocation of 12,584 households displaced by the Son La hydro-power project, finishing the most difficult job two years ahead of schedule.
These households are among a total of 18,897 local families living in the site designed as the power plant’s reservoir, which extends over three northwestern provinces of Son La, Lai Chau and Dien Bien.
At a ceremony to mark the event, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai described the success as a historic milestone in the construction of the nation’s largest hydro-power project, thus ensuring the commercial operation of the first turbine by coming December.
Hai called on administrations of Son La, Dien Bien and Lai Chau, where the project is located, to work harder to improve local production and living conditions, especially for relocated people in order to help them get established and even better off as soon as possible.
The Son La hydro-power project has a design capacity of 2,400 MW, the largest of its kind in Vietnam so far.
It is also expected to contribute to flood control in northern Vietnam and socio-economic development in the northwestern mountainous region.
Some 30,000 local families have to move to make way for the plant./.
