An elephant was found dead from stab wounds on April 25 near Tuyen Lam Lake tourist area, about 15km from Da Lat.

The 38-year-old male elephant, named Beckham, was found with serious stab wounds to its legs, its owner Phan Thi Hoa, director of Eco-tourism Nam Qua Co Ltd, said.

It was healthy the day before, Hoa said.

The cause of the attack was unknown and the elephant's tusks and tail, which were often targeted by poachers, were still intact, Hoa said.

The elephant, which was raised for tourism purposes, survived two serious attacks last year.

It was one of only six elephants in Da Lat left with its tusks and tail intact.

The others had been chopped off in previous raids, including two attacks last year.

The police are investigating the incident./.
