The statement was delivered by Ambassador Nguyen Van Tho at a regularNew Year press conference organised by the Vietnamese Embassy inChina in Beijing on Jan. 16.
The conferenceaims to update the local press circle on Vietnam ’s foreign policiesand the developments in the traditional friendship between Vietnam andChina .
Ambassador Tho briefed the Chinesepress on Vietnam ’s major socio-economic achievements in 2011 withhighlights being the 11 th Party National Congress and the election ofthe 13 th National Assembly.
Despite the turmoilin the region and the world last year, the Vietnamese Government has putforth a wide range of effective measures to stabilise the macroeconomy, curb inflation and ensure social welfare, Tho said.
Last year, Vietnam ’s GDP grew at 5.9 percent and inflation was kept at 18 percent, the diplomat added.
Mentioning the Vietnam-China ties, the ambassador said over the past62 years since the establishment of their diplomatic ties, the twocountries have always maintained the generally friendly diplomatic tiesdespite ups and downs, matching the aspiration and fundamental interestof their people.
The two countries’ relations lastyear continued to see positive steps in all areas from economics topolitical affairs and national defence, Tho noted.
The official visit to China by Vietnamese Party General SecretaryNguyen Phu Trong and the Vietnam visit by Chinese Vice President XiJinping played an important role in elevating the traditional friendshipand comprehensive cooperation between the two countries to a newheight, Tho said.
China has been Vietnam ’slargest trade partner for seven consecutive years with two-way tradeexceeding 40 billion USD in 2011, representing a year-on-year increaseof 30 percent.
Regarding disputes between the twocountries, Ambassador Tho underlined joint efforts in seeking suitablesolutions and in maintaining peace, stability and cooperation in theregion.
In the process of seeking fundamental andlong-term solutions to the sea issue, Vietnam and China willdiscuss transitional and temporary measures which do not harm eachside’s stance and policies in the spirit of mutual respect, equaltreatment and mutual benefit, Tho said.
The twosides will also conduct research and discussion regarding mutualdevelopment on the basis of legal regulation and principles ofinternational laws, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on theLaw of the Sea, according to the ambassador./.
