A photo exhibition on the Hoang Sa (Paracels) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagos was opened in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on August 27.

The city’s museum displays 100 photos and documents concerning the archipelagos, aiming to enrich people’s understanding of Vietnam ’s sovereignty over them.

On the occasion, more than 100 documents and images along with 100 antiquities found on a sunken ship in the southernmost province of Ca Mau are also on view.

Most of the 130,000 items recovered from the vessel are porcelain objects produced during the Yongzheng reign (1722 - 1735) of China ’s Qing dynasty. The ship, discovered in 1998, got into difficulty on its way from China ’s Guangzhou city to Europe .

The discovery proves the importance and strategic location of Vietnam ’s waters in international maritime trade many centuries ago.

The exhibition will run until December 15.-VNA
