A training course to boost public awareness on smoking prevention for 30 members of southern media organisations was held in Vung Tau city of southern coastal Ba Ria-Vung Tau province on Sept. 9.

Experts from the World Health Organistion (WHO) and the Ministry of Health talked about the harm caused by active and passive smoking and the global smoking epidemic.

They also updated attendees on the current state of tobacco use in Vietnam and around the world as well as smoking prevention efforts in Vietnam.

Trainees were introduced to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and the Vietnamese government’s plan on implementation of the FCTC.

From now to 2010, Vietnam will take various measures, such as increasing its tobacco tax and sale prices, restricting smoking at offices and public places and publicising the harmful contents and substances in cigarette smoke as part of its efforts to implement the FCTC./.
