Farmers withdraw suits against Vedan

More than 1,250 lawsuits filed by farmers in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province against Taiwanese MSG-maker Vedan Vietnam have been withdrawn after Vedan paid compensation to the farmers on Wednesday.

The lawsuits were filed to collect compensation for damage to farmlandcaused by the company's illegal discharge of untreated waste water intothe Thi Vai River.

Nguyen Thanh Ngoc, the lawyerrepresenting farmers in the province's Tan Thanh district, withdrew thelawsuits after Vedan paid 26.8 billion VND to 1,255 local farmersaffected.

Tran Van Cuong, deputy head of theprovincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said thecompany on August 17 transferred half of the total 53.6 billion VND (2.8million USD) compensation for Tan Thanh district's farmers.

The company also paid 500 million VND (26,000 USD) to cover costs ofcalculating the losses by Tan Thanh district authorities.

Cuong said the provincial People's Committee would entrust Tan ThanhDistrict authorities to draw up a list of names of farmers and thepayment amounts. The disbursement would then be conducted within thenext five days.

In addition, Vedan on August 17transferred 22.9 billion VND to the bank accounts of farmers in HCMCity's Can Gio district, the only area in the city affected by thepollution.

They also gave 500 million VND (26,000 USD) to Can Gio district authorities to cover the costs of calculating the losses.

In Dong Nai province, farmers have yet to agree on the amount ofcompensation and they continue to file lawsuits against Vedan with morethan 4,000 applications.

Dong Nai provincialPeople's Committee has ordered the Department of Natural Resources andEnvironment to visit the affected areas to talk to farmers and calculatethe amount of financial losses and measure the land area affected bythe pollution./.

Coast Guard Region 3 intensifies patrols to combat IUU fishing

After ten days of implementing a peak campaign against IUU fishing from October 29 to November 8, patrol and inspection forces of Coast Guard Region 3, in coordination with Border Guard Squadron 18, detected and fined 54 fishing vessels, collecting more than 580 million VND (about 22,000 USD) in fines.

Vietnam Red Cross launches emergency aid for storm-hit provinces

The Vietnam Red Cross Society has decided to allocate over 3.3 billion VND (125,472 USD) in cash and goods to assist Dak Lak, Gia Lai, and Quang Ngai provinces, with the funding from its H2025 relief account at Vietcombank and from the “Clean Water for Communities” project, sponsored by Procter & Gamble (P&G) through Americares.

Vietnamese, Chinese border guards coordinate to promote legal awareness among residents

During the four-day programme, thousands of leaflets were distributed, covering topics such as border management agreements and protocols, the agreement on regulations for management of the Vietnam–China land border, immigration and customs laws, border gate management, and measures to combat smuggling and trade fraud, as well as the importance of safeguarding national sovereignty and border security.

Breeding cows presented to poor households along Vietnam–Cambodia border

Accordingly, leaders of the Border Guard High Command and Tay Ninh province of Vietnam, and Svay Teap district in Svay Rieng province of Cambodia presented 20 breeding cows, valued at 20 million VND (760 USD) each, to 20 households - 10 in Long Thuan commune (Tay Ninh) and 10 in Monorom commune of Svay Teap district.
