The Vietnam National Institute of Ophthalmology (VNIO) on June 20 officially launched the country’s first training centre specialising in the Phaco eye surgery technique.

The centre is equipped with the state-of-the-art facilities worth over 600,000 USD.

It is expected to train between 50-60 eye surgeons each year in the technique which is used to treat cataract. In 2010 alone, VNIO plans to organise six training courses for 55 learners. Leading o phthalmology experts both at home and abroad will teach these courses.

VNIO’s Director Do Nhu Hon said cataract remains a major cause leading to blindness in Vietnam , making up 66 percent of the total number./.
