Fishermen’s awareness improves, Tien Giang records no IUU fishing cases

The Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang has recorded no violations related to illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing in 2023 and several previous years, thanks to the administration's efforts to raise fishermen’s awareness of consequences of IUU practices.

Tien Giang (VNA) – The Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang hasrecorded no violations related to illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU)fishing in 2023 and several previous years, thanks to the administration's efforts to raise fishermen’s awareness ofconsequences of IUU practices.

Nguyen Trong Tuy, Director of the FisheriesDivision under the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development,said that the unit has called on ship owners and fishermen to avoid infringingon foreign waters, and warned those who disconnect the vessel monitoring system(VMS).

The department has also coordinated withthe provincial border guard force and other units to encourage ship owners andfishermen to strictly follow regulations of Vietnamese and international lawsrelated to fishing.

Units of the provincial border guard forcehave intensified patrols to closely monitor and grasp the situation at sea.

At present, 100% operating fishing vesselsin Tien Giang are equipped with the VMS device./.
