Gender equality discussed in Hanoi

Speaking at the event, Minister of Labour, War Invalids and SocialAffairs (MoLISA) Pham Thi Hai Chuyen and UNDP Resident CoordinatorPratibha Mehta said the Vietnamese Party and State have determined tocomplete a legal framework and policy on the issue and combine thebuilding of legal documents with the implementation of the nationalstrategy on gender equality for the 2011-2020 period.

Vietnam has been recognized as achieving the fastest gender gap eradication in Southeast Asia , noted the forum.

Representatives from MOLISA’s Gender Equality Department said Vietnamhas recorded certain progress in gender equality and the advancement ofwomen with the number of women working for the National Assembly being24.4 percent, ranking 43 rd of 141 countries in the world and second ofeight ASEAN nations having parliaments.

At present,40 percent of ministries and ministerial-level agencies have womenleaders and People’s Committees of 24 out of 36 provinces and citieshave chairwomen or vice chairwomen. In 2012, 48 percent of more than 1.5million new job receivers and more than 20 percent of business leaderswere women.

However, UNDP representatives suggestedVietnam take urgent measures to implement and protect women andgirls’ rights, especially their own issues relating to reproductivehealth.

Vietnam needs to collect informationand make assessments of causes and effects of different forms ofviolence against women and children, they said.-VNA

Phu Tho: 200kg bomb safely relocated, detonated

According to a report by the Phu Tho Military Command, local residents spotted the bomb on August 31 in the Da River after the river water receded, exposing it beneath mud and soil on the riverbed. The bomb remained intact, including its fuse, and was located about 300m from a residential area.

Shift to data-driven administrative procedures needs acceleration

Under a draft decree replacing Decree 63, authorities will have to proactively pull information from databases and records for informational or technical procedures. Applicants would no longer be required to resubmit documents, and certification or information requests could not be turned into discretionary licensing through an “ask – give” mechanism.
