The Prime Minister has approved the Government’s programme of action on the popularisation of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The move aims to raise public awareness of the ASEAN Community’s conception, objectives, values and interests, as well as its pillars in the context that Vietnam and other ASEAN member countries are nearing the establishment of the ASEAN Community (scheduled for December 31, 2015 ).

Under the programme, the mass media from central to grassroots levels will run regular and special stories on ASEAN and the bloc’s events.

Each year, the country will cooperate with other ASEAN members to produce documentaries on ASEAN member countries and share them with other association members to promote its land and people.

The action programme also includes the organisation of seminars, exchanges and fact-finding trips to Vietnam for regional journalists, as well as contests for the public on the 10-member bloc.

The Government has assigned the Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC) to implement the programme during the 2013-2015 period and oversee the formation of a steering committee for the dissemination of ASE AN information.

The MIC, together with the Foreign Ministry, has been assigned to roll out activities during ASEAN Week (which will take place from July 28 to August 8 annually), and particularly for the period when the ASEAN Community comes in to being at the end of 2015 and early 2016.

Meanwhile, press agencies and publishing houses have been asked to provide information in a timely and accurate manner.

The steering committee for the dissemination of ASEAN information, headed by the MIC, is staffed by leaders of several ministries and agencies, including the Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs, the Finance Ministry, the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Education and Training, Vietnam Television, Radio the Voice of Vietnam, Vietnam News Agency and VTC Cable Television.-VNA
