Hanoi (VNA) - A ceremony was held to launch a communications programme on environmental protection in Hanoi on April 24.
The programme aims to raise awareness on environmental protection at all levels, organisations, and individuals to proactively respond to climate change, and improve people's quality of life for the sustainable development of the capital city, among other objectives set out in Resolution 11 of the municipal Party Committee.
Through communication activities, the programme will introduce solutions on technologies and eco-friendly products and encourage residents to participate in environmental protection.
Nguyen Thanh Loi, Editor-in-Chief of the Economic and Urban Newspaper and head of the programme's organising committee, said that based on the success of Hanoi's environmental protection writing contest, the newspaper had received approval from Hanoi authorities to upgrade it into an environmental protection communication programme.
The programme consists of a writing contest on environmental protection in Hanoi and communication events on the subject.
These events include seminars and lectures on environmental protection and other activities in schools and residential areas to warn about the risks of climate change and the responsibility of environmental protection in the city.
At the opening ceremony, Loi called for the cooperation and participation of people, experts, enterprises, and reporters, together with the organizing committee, to multiply environmental protection actions to make the capital green, clean, beautiful, and civilized.
Loi also stated that Hanoi has installed the infrastructure for 35 automatic air surveillance points and 6 surface water monitoring stations to track the purity of both environmental emissions and waste water in manufacturing areas, clusters, and production facilities.
The drive will measure the emissions of old and circulating motorcycles, and implement tasks in accordance with the master plan for environmental protection in the Nhue-Day river basins.
It will also serve to establish a plan for the improvement of water quality and the synchronous development of technical infrastructure in conjunction with the architectural planning of urban rivers, and construct six domestic wastewater treatment plants.
Hanoi is also planting one million trees in response to the government's initiative to plant a total of one billion between 2021 and 2025.
Loi stated, "This media event signifies a significant turning point in the spread of environmental protection actions in Hanoi."
This is a communication programme designed to increase awareness and responsibility at all levels, sectors, organisations, and individuals regarding environmental protection and proactivity in response to climate change.
It also aims to enhance living standards, contribute to the long-term sustainability of the capital, and accomplish the goals and targets outlined in Resolution No.11-NQ/TU from Hanoi Party Committee.
According to the organizing committee, the writing contest on environmental protection in Hanoi in 2023 will be based on several themes.
These include recognizing organizations and individuals who have outstanding activities and advanced models in protecting the environment.
Other topics include the introduction of advanced models, technical initiatives, new solutions and ideas on environmental protection and climate change response, reflecting problems in air, land, and water pollution; noise and solid waste management; and hazardous waste.
The program also aims to expose those behaviors that cause environmental degradation and pollution, the destruction of natural landscapes and ecosystems as well as threats to the public health community and sustainable development of the capital.
Entries submitted to the contest will cover research, reportage, interview, and long-form published in print and online versions in the Economic and Urban Newspaper and the central and municipal newspapers from July 1, 2022, to August 31, 2023.
The selected works will be awarded at a ceremony to be held in November./.
