HCM City (VNA) – Vice Chairman of the Ho ChiMinh City People’s Committee Huynh Cach Mang thanked US veterans for developingfriendship between the two countries when meeting the Vietnam Veterans ofAmerica (VVA) delegation on February 7.

The VVA delegation, led by POW/MIA (Prisoner of War/Missingin Action) Chair Grant T Coates, is on a visit to Vietnam to provideinformation on Vietnamese soldiers killed or reported missing in action duringthe war as part of the Veterans Initiative Programme.

Speaking at the meeting, Mang lauded the VVA’s goodwilland efforts to heal the aftermath of the war, notably the Veterans InitiativeProgramme. He thanked the VVA for helping deepen mutual understanding betweenthe governments and people of Vietnam and America and promoting reconciliation,normalisation and cooperation between the two nations.

He mentioned HCM City’s good relations with the US and itsactive role in fostering the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Partnership. The city hascooperated with partners from America in multiple projects, including FulbrightUniversity, he noted.

The VVA’s visit aims to provide Vietnam information anddocuments about Vietnamese soldiers who died or went missing during the war,discuss with Vietnam’s agencies on MIA issues of both sides and exchange views onVietnam-US relations, said Coates.

The 25-year-old Veterans Initiative Programme will continueworking with concerned parties to address post-war issues, such as aftermath ofAgent Orange/Dioxin and unexploded ordnance disposal, he added.-VNA

The visit also showed that Vietnam wants to further strengthen political trust between the two countries, identify orientations to bring the traditional friendship and Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Russia to new heights, strengthen the cooperative relationship between the Communist Party of Vietnam and major political parties in Russia.
