– The Malaysian Government on March 21 ordered all schools in Kedah and Perlis to close due to hot weather caused by El Nino, Bernama news agency said the same day.

Schools in the northern regions will be closed on March 22.

Temperatures in the two states were recorded as high as 39.2 degrees Celsius.

Minister of Education Mahdzir Khalid said that the decision was made on advice from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation; Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment; and Ministry of Health, following rising temperatures exceeding 37 degrees Celsius.

Earlier, the minister of Natural Resources and Environment asked for temporary closures of schools in the region if temperatures rise above 37 degree Celsius for more than 72 hours.

A particularly strong El Nino this year has triggered hot, dry weather in Malaysia. The country’s Meteorological Department forecasted that the conditions will continue until May or June.-VNA
