A 12-episode documentary following the epic journey of President Ho Chi Minh around the world, exploring ways of liberating the country from French colonial rule, will be shown on local channel HTV9 today to mark his 120th birthday.
The documentary, which began filming three years ago, is one of HCM City Television Film Studio's biggest projects this year, according to its director Nguyen Viet Hung.
"The documentary shows his journey over 35 years beginning with his departure from Sai Gon in 1911 to 1946 when he called for the entire nation to fight against the French," he said.
The journey is recounted chronologically, starting from his childhood in Nghe An province's Nam Dan district through important landmarks in his revolutionary life.
"The history of a country is sometimes formed by the movements of a great figure, and President Ho Chi Minh's travels covering more than 30 years is one of the greatest and most extraordinary journeys in the country's history," said scriptwriter Tran Dang Tuan.
"It was a journey filled with aspirations to explore the world, to change the course of the country's history," he added. "It's full of the adventures of a young revolutionary."
During the making of the film, the crew discovered new facts that shine more light on President Ho's legendary life, including his stay in Paris from 1917 to 1923.
"With materials found in French archives, we found that his time in Paris was very crucial to developing his political views and ideology," Tuan said.
The documentary also explores the Nguyen Ai Quoc (one of Ho Chi Minh's pseudonyms) case in Hong Kong in 1931, a political and judicial case lasting for almost two months, and the period from 1934 to 1938 which still remains largely mysterious.
The documentary, which was originally meant to mark the 100th anniversary of Ho Chi Minh's departure from Sai Gon in 1911, will air at 11:30 pm./.
