The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled on November 11 that the area around the ancient Preah Vihear temple belongs to Cambodia.
The United Nations' highest court said a 1962 ruling made by the court determined that Cambodia "has sovereignty over the whole territory of the promontory of Preah Vihear" and therefore Thailand was under an obligation to withdraw "from the territory Thai military or police forces or other guards or keepers" stationed around the temple.
The court's 1962 verdict determined that the 900-year-old temple on the Cambodia-Thailand border belongs to Cambodia, but did not rule on the sovereignty over the 4.6 sq km of land adjacent to it.
After the temple was designated as a World Heritage site in 2008, Cambodian and Thai troops engaged in conflicts over the land around it, resulting in casualties on both sides.
Cambodia submitted the border dispute to the ICJ in April, 2011.
Ahead of the ruling by The Hague-based ICJ, leaders of the two countries called for calm. The court decision is binding and cannot be appealed.-VNA
