Indonesia, Japan collaborate in tackling climate change, waste management

Indonesia and Japan have committed to cooperate in tackling global challenges such as climate change, waste management and conservation efforts to support environmental sustainability, Indonesian Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar said following a recent meeting with her Japanese counterpart Yagi Tetsuya.

Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia and Japan have committed to cooperate in tackling global challenges such as climate change, waste management and conservation efforts to support environmental sustainability, Indonesian Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar said following a recent meeting with her Japanese counterpart Yagi Tetsuya.

The minister said those areas of cooperation are in line with Indonesia’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and achieve the targets set in its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) document. A working team at the ministry is supporting the acceleration of cooperation between Indonesia and Japan on climate and carbon, she noted.

The official said the team will focus on preparing the National Registry System (SRN), MRV (measurement, reporting, verification) system, the Indonesian Emission Reduction Certificate (SPEI) system, and potential pilot projects in the forestry and waste sectors.

Regarding waste management, Indonesia and Japan are cooperating in mercury management through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), she said.

Other areas of cooperation between the two countries include waste management in Legok Nangka, West Java and cooperation in the management of electronic, solid waste, and hazardous waste./.
