Seoul (VNA) – Indonesia and the Republic of Korea (RoK) agreed to tighten their partnerships in defence and other sectors during the third joint committee’s meeting between the two foreign ministries in Jakarta on April 8.

At the meeting, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi and her Korean counterpart Kang Kyung-wha had in-depth discussions and consultations on major pending bilateral issues, as well as sought out ways to boost substantive cooperation, and cultural and people-to-people exchange.

They expressed their hope for the continuance of mutually-beneficial cooperation in the defence industry, pointing out that defence collaboration is a foundation for the two countries’ strategic partnership and trust.

The two foreign ministers highlighted the importance of expanding cooperation to continue facilitating two-way trade and voiced expectations that the two nations will strike a deal this year on negotiations on the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

They also agreed to bolster collaboration in transportation, infrastructure, science, technology, forestry, and agriculture.

Indonesia, the world’s fourth most populous nation, is a key partner of the RoK in its New Southern Policy, which aims to improve its relations with countries located south of the peninsula, especially India and the ASEAN. –VNA
