Indonesia will make the potential maritime economy a spearhead sector in its national development strategy, according to Indonesian Minister for Maritime and Fisheries Resources Sharif C. Sutardjo.

The country will focus on strengthening management over maritime resources and enhancing investment on blue economy, he said at a conference on sea and fisheries in Pekanbaru on October 9.

According to Indonesia ’s Ministry for Maritime and Fisheries Resources, seafood and aqua farming sector’s contribution to the country’s GDP has increased, rising from 6.2 percent in 2010 to 6.9 percent in 2013 in the context where the Indonesian economy growth fell from 6.2 percent to 5.7 percent.

Fishing and aqua farming in Indonesia bring higher profit compared to rice cultivation and animal breeding, said the ministry.

A survey by the Indonesian Statistic Office in 2013 showed that the average income of households practising aqua farming and fishing was 50.84 million rupiah (4,100 USD) per year, much higher that that of households living on rice farming and breeding at between 13-20 million rupiah.

However, Indonesia has yet to tap full potential of its maritime economy, with the current catching reaching only about 5.9 million tonnes per year and aqua farming output of 13.7 million tonnes. Experts asserted that the output can rise by 20 percent if the country applies advanced technology in the sector.-VNA
