Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia’s South Kalimantan province aims to plant 10,000 trees in a bid to recover the environment, which has been damaged by forest fires.

Attending a tree planting festival held in the province on November 26, President Joko Widodo called for sustainable efforts to prevent future blazes, adding that the Government is planning to recover the peat ecosystem to protect peatland resources.

Recently, Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar underscored the need to restore peat land that was seriously degraded by fires, with the involvement of government agencies and experts.

The Government is considering the establishment of an agency responsible for controlling peat ecosystem restoration activities and implementing measures to speed up the process.

The nation is also working with Finland to boost the effective management and use of the resources.

Despite ranking third in terms of natural resources, Indonesia is the world’s 6 th emitter of greenhouse gases. The local government set a goal of cutting carbon emissions by 29 percent by 2030.-VNA
