Renowned Japanese newspapers, including The Daily Yomiuri, Kyodo News and Japan Times, ran articles highlighting Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s official visit to Japan on September 15.
The bilateral friendship and Japan’s assistance to Vietnam are prominently featured in the articles.
They emphasised the unanimity of the two countries’ leaders on the East Sea issue, saying that all disputes need to be handled peacefully and on the basis of international law.
Both General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe expressed deep concern over actions that change the status quo and cause tensions in the East Sea, such as large-scale island construction, the articles wrote.
The two leaders’ commitments to intensifying economic and security ties, particularly Abe’s pledge to provide an additional 100 billion JPY (835 million USD) for Vietnam to help the country develop infrastructure projects, were also mentioned.
Japan vowed to provide two more patrol ships to strengthen law enforcement in the East Sea as part of security cooperation.
According to the articles, to boost extensive strategic partnership, Vietnam and Japan also agreed to intensify collaboration in agriculture. Vietnam committed to opening its doors to Japanese apples in exchange for the availability of Vietnamese mangos to Japanese consumers.
The two sides also agreed to work together towards the completion of negotiations on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement.
Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is paying a four-day official visit to Japan, starting on September 15.
