Vientiane (VNA) – Lao media outlets on January 22 continued to publish extensive coverage praising Vietnam’s achievements after nearly four decades of Doi moi (Renewal) and expressing strong confidence in the country’s future development under the orientations set forth at the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV).
Pasaxon, the organ of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) Central Committee, ran an article entitled “14th National Party Congress: Confidence in Development”, affirming that the CPV’s 14th National Congress has attracted broad domestic and international attention as a particularly important political event.
The Congress, the article noted, provides a comprehensive review of Vietnam’s nearly 40 years of Doi moi, marked by major successes, while also charting the course for the country’s next development stage amid a rapidly changing, complex and unpredictable international environment.
Looking back on Vietnam’s development since 1986, the Pasaxon article highlighted the country’s profound and comprehensive transformation. From a centrally planned economy, Vietnam has gradually and successfully established a socialist-oriented market economy, maintaining an average GDP growth rate of around 6.5% per year over several decades. Per capita income has shot up nearly 25-fold, reflecting sustained efforts to promote economic growth alongside socio-political stability.
The article also underscored Vietnam’s proactive and effective integration into the world, which has enabled the country to expand cooperation, participate deeply in regional and global value chains, and assert an increasingly important role in multilateral mechanisms and cooperation frameworks.
At the international level, Vietnam is now widely recognised as a reliable and responsible partner with a constructive voice on regional and global issues, the Lao newspaper noted. The establishment and upgrade of relations to comprehensive strategic partnerships with many countries, including major powers and leading economic centres, along with Vietnam’s active participation in multilateral forums such as ASEAN, the United Nations and APEC, have helped strengthen its national position, expand development space and enhance resilience to external fluctuations.
According to Pasaxon, the 14th Congress was held with a strong aspiration for development, not only nationwide but also closely linked to the goal of elevating Vietnam’s role and standing in the international arena. The preparation of Congress documents was carried out in a scientific and practical manner, closely combining a review of 40 years of Doi moi with forecasts of regional and global development trends.
The writing particularly highlighted the broad consultation process, which drew nearly 14 million contributions from people of all social strata. This, it said, reflects the value of democracy and high social consensus while helping refine major orientations on sustainable development, digital transformation, economic and energy stability, and Vietnam’s active participation in addressing global challenges.
Meanwhile, Pathatlao, the online publication of the Lao National News Agency, ran an article titled “Forty years of Doi moi lead Vietnam to a new era of development”. It emphasised that the 14th National Party Congress has strongly mobilised the determination, wisdom and collective will of the entire Party and people to successfully realise the national development goals for 2030 and enable the country to advance confidently in the era of the nation's rise.
Recalling the historic significance of the CPV’s 6th National Congress in 1986, which launched the Doi moi process, Pathatlao stressed that Vietnam’s new economic mindset and foreign policy helped remove development barriersto support the country to overcome crisis, develop, integrate into the world, and improve people's living standards. The right and time policy decisions made at the 6th Congress have helped Vietnam stay adaptable to the most complicated political developments in the world, steer clear of risks, and seize development opportunities.
The report affirmed that Vietnam’s development achievements have demonstrated the correctness and creativity of the Party’s Doi moi line, which has earned the trust, support and active participation of the people. Vietnam, it observed, has never before possessed such a mission, strength, role and international influence as it does today.
Summarising the 2020–2025 period, Pathatlao highlighted Vietnam’s resilience amid challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, natural disasters and global geopolitical volatility. Despite these difficulties, the country has maintained macroeconomic stability, ranked 32nd globally in economic size, achieved per capita income exceeding 5,000 USD, and entered the group of upper-middle-income countries—meeting the key targets set by the 13th Party Congress.
