Binh Thuan (VNA) – Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong has requested for closer supervision of breeding shrimp production and disease management, aiming to foster shrimp farming in coastal localities nationwide.
At a conference hosted by the ministry in the central province of Binh Thuan on August 15, he asked shrimp farming establishments to restructure their production and promote application of technologies to improve shrimp quality.
The ministry will work with relevant agencies to map out plans and strategies to foster the development of the sector, towards building trademark for Vietnamese shrimp, Cuong stated.
Chairman of the Binh Thuan Shrimp Association Nguyen Hoang Anh highlighted the significance of the quality of breeding shrimp for Vietnam’s shrimp industry, asking the ministry to devise plans for the sector’s sustainable development in the future.
Participants to the event discussed how to improve the quality of breeding shrimp and push the domestic production of breeding shrimp.
They suggested the ministry consider developing the shrimp farming into a national key product, thus working out breakthrough strategies to speed up the industry.
They stressed the need for coastal localities, especially those specialising in farming shrimp, to enhance cooperation in producing brackish water shrimp in order to better the quality.
Brackish shrimp is one of the important aquatic products of Vietnam, which has great potential for further development.
In the first six months of 2016, Vietnam’s brackish-water shrimp output reached 191,000 tonnes, equivalent to 22 percent of the plan set for the year.
Vietnam has had 1,750 breeding brackish-water shrimp production establishments as of June this year.
Southern coastal provinces such Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, and Binh Thuan are major breeding shrimp barns of the country, meeting about 50 percent of the domestic demand.
Vietnam mainly imports breeding white-leg shrimp from the US, Singapore, Thailand and Mexico.-VNA
