Hanoi (VNS/VNA) - A ceremony to inaugurate the Mahatma Gandhi bust took place on August 27 at the Indian Embassy in Hanoi as this year Indian people are celebrating the 150th anniversary of his birth.

Gandhi (1869–1948) was an activist leading the Indian independence movement against British rule. The bust was brought to Vietnam from India.

The ceremony was part of activities organised during the visit of Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.

On the same day, she donated artificial limb fitments of Jaipur Foot to Vietnamese beneficiaries in the northern province of Phu Tho.

She also witnessed the MOU signing ceremony between the International Centre for Cultural Studies (ICCS) and My SonSanctuary Management Board.

Accordingly, Indian experts will support Vietnam to restore and preserve the antiques.

“India-Vietnam relations are not only the relations established after India’s independence, these relations are centuries old and are cultural, historical and also commercial,” she said.

Indian Ambassador Shri P Harish said the past few years have seen a significant strengthening in defence and security cooperation.

“In the field of culture, the establishment of Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre two years ago has enhanced our cultural footprint,” he said.

“Thousands of Vietnamese have been participating in the International Yoga Day celebrations with passion. The Archaeological Survey of India is actively contributing in the conservation and preservation of our joint cultural heritage at the world heritage site of Mỹ Sơn.”-VNS/VNA
