Hanoi (VNA) – Ngo Quy Dang, a “golden boy” in mathematics of the High School for Gifted Students (HSGS) under the University of Science at the Vietnam National University - Hanoi, has become one of the 10 promising young Vietnamese selected by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee.

Long list of accomplishments

The year 2020 was special for Dang when he became the first 10th grader to be a member of the Vietnamese team competing at an international mathematical olympiad, which is traditionally for 12th graders.

That a 10th grader became a team member is unprecedented in the country, said HSGS Principal Le Cong Loi.

Loi noted that Dang passed exams to join the classes specialised in physics and maths of the school. Just a few months after the start of his 10th grade, teachers realised his special capabilities and let him attend the team as an observer. Since then, he has quickly absorbed knowledge of higher grades and outpaced many other candidates to become an official member of the team.

Notably, Dang won a gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad, marking a new milestone in Vietnam’s participation in the competition so far.

Assoc. Prof. Le Anh Vinh, Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Institute of Educational Sciences, said since Dang was a junior high school student, he has been well-known among mathematicians in the country.

The gold medal adds to his long list of accomplishments, including the first prize for mathematics in the Hanoi competition for talented students when he was a 9th grader. In the 8th grade, he pocketed a gold medal in the international category of the Hanoi Open Mathematics Competition, a gold medal in the contest seeking young maths talents, and the first prize in the Kangaroo Maths Contest.

In the 7th grade, Dang won the gold medal at an international mathematics and science contest held in Indonesia, the first prize at an international mathematics competition among cities, the first prize at the Kangaroo Maths Contest, a gold medal at the Singapore mathematics contest, and a silver at the Singapore international mathematics competition.

In the 6th grade, he brought home silver medals from the Singapore international mathematics competition and the Malaysia international mathematics contest.

Genial, multi-talented boy

Not only good at mathematics, Dang has also gained many achievements at English language contests such as a consolation prize in the category for general education students at an English language olympiad in 2018, and a silver medal at the national Internet Olympiad of English for general education students in the 2016 - 2017 academic year.

Besides, he is also a humorous host of school events, Principal Loi said.

Vu Nhu Nguyet, head teacher of Dang’s class, described him as a student who every teacher “wishes” to have under their wing, adding that he is very humorous and active, and always enthusiastically takes part in all activities of the class.

Widely known as a talented student, Dang is still modest, sincere, and open to others and also a highly responsible student, Nguyet said.

Thanks to his achievements, he was selected as one of the 20 exemplars of the third Vietnam Young Talent Congress, granted the second-class Labour Order by the State President, and named one of the 10 promising young Vietnamese in 2020./.
