Mine action programme helps tackle post-war aftermaths

The National Mine Action Programme for 2010-2025 has helped survivors of war-time bombs and mines return to normal life and raised public awareness of bomb and mine risks.

Hanoi (VNA) –The National Mine Action Programme for 2010-2025 has helped survivorsof war-time bombs and mines return to normal life and raised public awarenessof bomb and mine risks, said Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment NguyenThe Phuong.

Phuong madethe statement at the first meeting of the Mine Action Partnership Group (MAPG)in Hanoi on March 15.

The NationalMine Action Programme for 2010-2025 (also known as Programme 504) aims to minimizethe economic and health impacts of bombs, mines and unexploded ordnance (UXO)in Vietnam.

The programmehas helped Vietnam improve its institutional capacity and human resources,develop advanced technology for demining activities and expand internationalcooperation in healing the aftermaths of post-war bombs and mines, the deputyminister noted.

Speaking onbehalf of the MAPG, US Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius said Vietnam has workedhard to clear contaminated areas and the US has been Vietnam’s partner in thiseffort since 1993.

The US iswilling to share experience with Vietnam in this field, and ready to learn fromVietnam’s experience and share it to the world, he added.

AmbassadorStefano Toscano, Director of the Geneva International Centre for HumanitarianDemining (GICHD) said the establishment of the MAPG marked a milestone in aneffort by Vietnam to coordinate with international communities to cope withpost-war bomb aftermaths.

The centre,which supports the Vietnamese Government and relevant agencies, hoped tocontinue receiving supports and donors from partners in the effort.                                                                                                 

According tothe Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, more than 800,000 tonnesof unexploded bombs and mines are buried across 21 percent of the country,mainly in the central provinces of Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri,Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Ngai.

Wartime bombsand mines have killed about 42,130 people and injured 62,160 others todate.-VNA

According to the document, at around 13:00 on July 11, an especially serious waterway traffic accident occurred about 200 metres off Hon May Rut Ngoai Island. Passenger canoe AG-26751, carrying 32 Indian tourists and three crew members, capsized while travelling from Hon May Rut Ngoai Island to An Thoi Port, claiming 15 lives as of 15:00 the same day.

Search and rescue underway after tourist speedboat capsizes off Phu Quoc

According to the local authorities, the canoe operated by Ocean Pearl Island Company was transporting 32 Indian tourists and three crew members, including one captain, one mechanic, and one staff member, capsized while en route from May Rut Ngoai Island to An Thoi Port amid strong wave and wind condition. As a result, by 15:00 on July 11, the accident had claimed 15 lives.

500-day campaign receives war memorabilia, martyr records

The donated materials include files on three martyrs’ personal belongings, burial records and maps identifying the graves of 21 martyrs at K76A Hospital, and decoded documents relating to Unit 962, linked to artefacts unearthed during excavation work at Le Thi Rieng Park in Hoa Hung ward.

Man jailed for smashing Nguyen Dynasty throne armrest

According to the indictment, Tam bought an admission ticket to the citadel around noon on May 24, 2025. Once inside Thai Hoa Palace, he climbed over a protective barrier, sat on the "Nguyen Dynasty Throne", and broke off the front-left armrest before striking the artifact further and shattering the broken section into multiple pieces.
