The Department of Product Quality Management has ordered relevant authorities to immediately carry out quality checks of helmet manufacturing units following allegations in a newspaper.

In a dispatch last Friday, the department – which operates under the Ministry of Science and Technology – instructed the Quality Assurance and Testing Centres 1, 2, and 3, the Quality Certification Centre, and Bureau of Accreditation to carry out surprise checks of certified helmet manufacturers.

The move follows a story by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on June 21, titled “Shock with helmet quality”, which claimed 71 percent of helmets in the market bearing the name of the certified manufacturers are sub-standard.

It also ordered them to inspect other manufacturers.

Manufacturers of poor-quality helmets have been ordered to recall their products.

The ministry announced in late May that as of July 1, all helmets must bear the new “CR” quality seal, replacing the current “CS” and “RS” stamps./.
