The Ministry of Health has warned of the possible intrusion of avian influenza A (H7N9) into Vietnam as the virus is raging in neighbouring China and Cambodia.

Hanoi (VNA) – The Ministryof Health has warned of the possible intrusion of avian influenza A (H7N9) intoVietnam as the virus is raging in neighbouring China and Cambodia.

According to the World HealthOrganisation (WHO), the avian influenza A (H7N9) outbreak in China is the fifthsince the virus was first detected in 2013 and the largest so far.

Between October 2016 and February19, 2017, 425 infections in human were reported, mostly in China’s Guangxi,Yunnan and Guangdong provinces close to Vietnam. The figure is rising.

At the same time, Cambodia’s SveyRieng province, which borders Vietnam’s southern provinces of Long An and TayNinh, is also struggling with the virus.

Tran Dac Phu, head of the ProtectiveMedicine Department under the Ministry of Health, said no cases of influenza Avirus subtypes H7N9, H5N8, H5N1 in humans had been found so far, but two nestsof subtype H5N1 and H5N6 were detected the provinces of Bac Lieu, Nghe An andNam Dinh.

Dam Xuan Thanh, Vice Director ofthe Department for Animal Health under the Ministry of Agriculture and RuralDevelopment, said that Truc Ninh district in Nam Dinh province announced onFebruary 20 the destruction of 4,600 ducks with A (H5N1) virus.

Meanwhile, the WHO reported thatavian influenza A (H7N9) has become stronger after receiving China’s genesequencing report on two human infections in Guangdong province.

Amidst the alarming situation,Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has issued an urgent direction on theprevention and control of the epidemic, asking for the involvement of all thepolitical system.

Deputy Minister of Health NguyenThanh Long requested the whole sector to prepare to tackle all epidemic scenarios,including those with no human infection cases, human infections without humanto human transfers, infections with human transferal, and epidemic outbreak inthe community.

Training courses will also be heldfor health officials, while treatment equipment will be prepared.

He added that the sector willestablish a network of health care facilities capable of giving avian influenzavirus treatment across the country, while strengthening communications to raisepublic awareness on protective measures against the virus.-VNA

To accommodate surging travel demand and keep transport operations running smoothly, the PM instructed relevant bodies to boost transport capacity, particularly public passenger services, to ensure seamless connections at railway stations, airports, bus terminals and ferry ports. Authorities were told to ensure that no travellers are left stranded or delayed in returning home for Tet due to a shortage of transport, while strictly preventing fare gouging and unlawful price hikes. Proactive measures to curb traffic accidents and congestion during the peak holiday period were also highlighted.
