Dong Thap (VNA) – Various ancient objects and pieces of architecture were discovered in the special national Go Thap relic site in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap during excavations in 2015.

According to Dang Van Thang from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities under the Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City , a wide white-brick path running from East to West was found in the site.

A temple with 17.3 metres in length and 8 metres in width dedicated to Vishnu, a supreme God of Vaishnavism, a main sect of Hinduism, and a square pond built with red, pink and white bricks were also unearthed in the complex.

Other objects include debris of statue hands, two stone pestles, necklaces, reliefs, gold leaves, coins and pottery, which are believed to be associated with the Oc Eo civilisation.

The architectural works dated back from the 6 th -7 th century AD, while the objects were from the 11 th -12 th century AD, Thang said.

Director of the management board of the Go Thap relic site Nguyen Huu Ly said excavations contributed to further understanding issues related to politics, economy, culture and religion in the Oc Eo civilisation, thus serving restoration and preservation in the site.

The Go Thap archaeological complex was recognised as a special national relic site in late 2012.-VNA
