Hanoi (VNA) - Myanmar's government has named former permanent representative to the United Nations U Kyaw Tint Swe as Minister of the Office of State Counselor.

Myanmar’s media quoted sources from the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) as saying that the appointment aims to assist State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi in performing her responsibilities.

U Kyaw Tint Swe is currently a member of the Union Parliament's Legal Affairs and Special Cases Assessment Commission.

Previously, Myanmar's Union Parliament on May 10 approved the establishment of the office following President U Htin Kyaw’s proposal.

With the decision, Myanmar's new government is operating with 22 ministries, down from 36 in the previous government.

In addition to heading the Ministry of the Office of State Counselor, Aung San Suu Kyi holds two more posts - Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the President's Office.

According to Myanmar’s 2008 Constitution, the three ministries of home affairs, border affairs and defence are run by military personnel.-VNA
