The Myanmar Government and the Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO) on May 28 resumed peace talks in Myitkyina, the capital of Myanmar 's northernmost state of Kachin.

According to news reports, the Government side was headed by U Aung Min, Vice Chairman of the Central Peace Making Work Committee, and Lieutenant General Myimt Soe from the Defence Ministry, while the KIO side was led by U Sun Lut Kan and Deputy Commander General Khun Maw.

The three-day talks were also attended by special envoy of the UN Secretary General Vijay Nambiar, as well as representatives from Kachin state parliament, ethnic minority groups and China .

The round of talks beginning May 28 is the first to be held in the Kachin state capital of Myitkyina. Previous rounds took place in Thailand on February 20 and in China on February 4 and March 12.

Kachin Independence Organisation is the political wing of the Kachin Independence Army (KIA).-VNA
