National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung hosted a reception forPresident of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Saber Chowdhury and IPUSecretary General Martin Chungong on March 25, both of whom are inHanoi to attend the 132 nd IPU Assembly (IPU-132).

The top legislator thanked the union’s leaders and its secretariatfor supporting Vietnam’s preparations for the large-scale diplomaticevent.

The IPU-132 organising board welcomed theIPU leaders’ opinions and comments on the preparation process,particularly those relating to the assembly’s working programme, agendaand theme “Sustainable development goals: Turning words into action”, hesaid.

Their comments have helped solidifydiscussion content, draft resolutions and the joint declaration to beadopted at the assembly, he added.

The NA leaderaffirmed that the success of the IPU-132 will contribute to raising theunion’s role in the international arena and achieving the UnitedNations Millennium Development Goals, as well as contributing to theWorld Summit of Legislators to be held later this year.

The IPU President and Secretary General expressed their delight atvisiting Hanoi and joining the 132 nd assembly, highlighting their goodimpressions of the host country’s preparations.

President Saber Chowdhury said the event contents are practical andcover a wide range of important global issues, including water, networksecurity and international law.

He expressed hisbelief that the IPU-132 hosted by Vietnam will be a success, providingparticipants with positive impressions of the country through itsthorough preparation, hospitability and practical decisions contributingto the development of the IPU and the international community.-VNA

They also pledged to share legislative and supervisory experience, coordinate positions in international organisations, support each other’s candidacies for UN bodies, and effectively implement the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).
