Hanoi (VNA) – The Vietnamese army and people's April 30, 1975 triumph remains an enduring source of inspiration and encouragement for struggles for national liberation, independence and freedom of many countries worldwide, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Argentina Jorge Kreneyss has said.
Talking to the Vietnam News Agency (VNA)'s correspondent in Buenos Aires, Kreneyss recalled the 1960s and 1970s when, in his early 20s, anti-war movements in Argentina, Chile, Brazil, and other South American countries voiced strong support for Vietnam’s just struggle.
“I was part of a generation that lived through and witnessed the years of US imperialism invading Vietnam. We closely followed every information of the war on the other side of the hemisphere. Vietnam was already renowned for its resounding victory over the French colonialists”, he said.
At that time, young members of the Communist Party of Argentina joined a movement in solidarity with the Vietnamese people, he said, noting that this powerful movement brought together progressive forces who opposed imperialist invasions in Latin America, Asia, and Africa.
Kreneyss said that Argentina donated tonnes of quinine medicine to support Vietnam in treating malaria for soldiers on the battlefield. As a gesture of gratitude, at congresses and international conferences, Argentinean communists received unforgettable mementoes from their Vietnamese friends - rings crafted from the wreckage of downed US aircraft.
“These keepsakes always remind us to follow the heroic example of the Vietnamese people, who were willing to sacrifice their lives for national independence,” he stressed.
Recalling the moment he received the joyous news from the Vietnamese battlefield, Kreneyss shared that at the time, Argentina had a solidarity movement with Vietnam which regularly reported on the war. On April 30, 1975, media outlets announced Vietnam’s historic victory - a moment of great joy for communists and an inspiration for national liberation movements across Africa.
He affirmed that the April 30, 1975 triumph, which led to the complete liberation of the South and the reunification of Vietnam, once again demonstrated the important role played by the Communist Party of Vietnam in guiding the nation from one triumph to another.
Kreneyss highlighted Vietnam’s efforts in post-war reconstruction, noting that the Doi moi (renewal) process introduced open economic policies, promoted the private economic sector's development, and expanded international cooperation.
After nearly 40 years, Vietnam has become a prosperous society with a developing economy, he said, adding that the Southeast Asian country has deeply integrated into many regional and international organisations./.
